Rampant Rambling
I'm Malina and you're offensive.
(If you can't see the next page button, zoom out)
ALL FUCKING RIGHT. I AM PISSED OFF.
I tried to be nice. Really. I just wanted to politely explain why supporting a cosplay that trivializes and idealizes traumatic events in people’s lives is in bad taste. (You can see what I’m talking about here, but I will warn you that it depicts an attempted rape scene in Watchmen.) And this fucking turd thinks that it’s okay because it’s “art.” Fuck off. Art is beautiful, and meaningful, and forces people to think and evaluate the world around them. This is not art. This is non-survivor privilege bullshit.
Yes, there in an attempted rape in Watchmen. A lot of books deal with the topic of rape and violence against women. Which, personally I think demeans the issue, but that is another discussion for another time. The mark of a real work of art is that it will handle this material with sensitivity and compassion to people who have lived through real and traumatizing events. These two fuckwads show complete insensitivity to anyone who has ever been a victim of domestic violence or rape.
And NO, my URL does not glamorize violence against minors. It’s the title of a fucking book (which you would know if you even took 5 seconds to look at my blog or google the name) by Kathy Acker, a post-punk feminist who would have teared you up for even attempting to argue that those costumes were okay. Blood and Guts in High School actually deals with sexual violence, and unlike that cosplay, presents it as the scarring and psychologically disturbing event that it is.
I’m not trying to pacify the world — I’m really not. (Do you know the extent of my love for horror movies?) I just want people to recognize that some things are in poor taste. This is the misogyny equivalent of showing up in blackface. Technically, you have the right to do it, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not an asshole if you actually go through with it it. Those costumes are not only bigoted in their non-survivor bravado, but actually may be triggering to anybody at the convention or anybody who sees it online. A costume that subjugates an entire group of people and trivializes their struggle isn’t a costume. It’s an act of ignorance.
So basically fuck you.
