Really solid advice. Some other pointers I’ve picked up: If a cop asks you to step out of you vehicle, and you feel uncomfortable doing so (e.g. you’re a woman and it’s late at night and/or the cop is freaking you out), you have the right to ask for them to call over their supervisor or a female police officer. And if you have a police officer in your home with a warrant, take a look at what they’re allowed to look for. If the warrant does not say they’re allowed to search through your computer, do not let them. Tell them to come back with another warrant. And remember to write down or remember all the actions that the officer took when arresting you — if they performed an illegal search or used excessive force, the entire charge can be thrown out. If you end up as a witness in a case, it’s a good idea to consult legal council to see what your rights are and what you legally can’t be compelled to say. For instance, you cannot be compelled to testify against your spouse in a court of law.
