Thoughts on The Hunger Games movie:

  1. They did a good job reducing the creepiness of Peeta’s affection for Katniss. Not going to lie, he was pretty creepy sometimes in the book.
  2. He still did some weird shit in the movie. “After that, I watched you walk home every day. EVERY DAY”
  3. In the kiss, they cut almost immediately to Gale. Awkward.
  4. Jennifer Lawrence was a pretty good Katniss. She made it clear that Katniss is kind of a loser sometimes — and that’s okay
  5. I still would’ve preferred Saoirse Ronan
  6. Josh Hutcherson was solid as Peeta. Believable, and more charming than obsessive. Also, he’s cute. No complaints.
  7. Some of the Capitol characters didn’t do the accent. NO. CONSISTENCY PLEASE.
  8. PRIMROSE EVERDEEN WAS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. OSCARS OSCARS OSCARS.
  9. Too many Capitol  scenes, not enough character development of the tributes. Rue, Katniss, Peeta, and Gale were all underdeveloped. In the movie’s defense, Peeta and Gale aren’t that well developed in the book either.
  10. The Careers looked like the “popular” kids at school. They’re supposed to be trained killers what the fuck.
  11. I love Clove.
  12. I love Thresh.
  13. Haymitch was way too campy and too competent. More booze, less coordination.

Ugh, do you ever read a book or a series and think, “YOU HAVE SO MUCH POTENTIAL. LET ME FIX YOU” and quietly mope about the wasted imagination to yourself? Because that’s pretty much what I’m doing to The Hunger Games trilogy right now. So many half developed concepts and improbabilities. Not to mention the second half of Mockingjay is pretty much a shitstorm. I’m just consumed with an overwhelming desire to back through the books and FIX THE DAMN WRITING. Idek, I like the idea of the series, but it’s kind of thoughtless and haphazard sometimes.

50 Book Challenge: Book #11

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

One of the most underdeveloped, unsatisfying endings to a book series I have ever read. And things were going so well until the second half, too. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the book, but the ending left a lot to be desired. Like, an ending, for instance.

50 Book Challenge: Book #10

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

I read this one in less time than the first, which had to have been a good thin, but I feel like the first one was better. To me, the sequel regurgitated too many plot elements of the first book. I wanted to read a sequel to The Hunger Games, not The Hunger Games op. 2, you know? Some more development of Peeta Mellark (who I call “Princess Peach.”), which was nice.

50 Book Challenge: Book #9

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Mildly entertaining. Not as cool as Battle Royale, but it has its merits. My one qualm is that the characters are rather thinly imagined. Katniss Everdeen is so thoroughly committed to being the kickass heroine that she sounds almost robotic at times. People as nice as Peeta Mellark do not exist. Also,he gets a little too Edward Cullen for my taste sometimes. Gale is brooding and rebellious, though fiercely loyal to his family, which whoopdefuckingdo is not much of a character. And Prim, who’s the entire reason why Katniss goes into the arena, never becomes anything more than a symbol of purity. I did like the book, though. It might sound like I didn’t, but I actually did. Dystopian fiction always appeals to me. I would recommend it to people who aren’t as anal-retentive about character development as I am.

So I just wrote this long ass post about The Hunger Games Trilogy. But then I accidentally deleted it, so I’m going to start over. Now, admittedly, the first 2 1/2 books were good. But then Suzanne Collins must have took a truckload of opiates at the end, because none of the last part makes any sense. At all. I mean, seriously? What kind of editor lets her publish what will obviously become an instant bestseller when it’s really not even finished? That being said, here is my rant. Full of spoilers***************

Okay, so I get that Katniss chose Peeta because he’s kind and dependable, and even though Gale is fiery and independent, he’s also vengeful. And Katniss can’t get over his propensity for destruction, which may or may not have killed her sister. But WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THEIR FRIENDSHIP? I mean, come the fuck on. You don’t desert your best friend like that because they move to District 2 and you get married to Peeta McDreamypants. And speaking of desertion, Katniss’ mother should have stayed with her, because for serious, you do not leave a seventeen-year-old war hero unhinged and disturbed miles away from you. Like, I do not see where that is coming from. And then when Katniss voted for the Hunger Games for the Capitol children, I was like, “WHAT THE FUCK THAT IS SO OUT OF CHARACTER.” So that pissed me off. But I also want to know if those Hunger Games actually happened. And how Snow’s trial went on. And how Katniss’ trial went on. And what the fuck happened to Panem.

And then there’s Annie and her son, which, come on, Collins cannot donate a paragraph to resolving? And FUCKING JOHANNA MASON, WHO WAS MY SECOND FAVORITE CHARACTER. The treatment of her storyline at the end of the novel was callous and haphazard at best. And then even though it was totally obvious that Katniss and Peeta would end up together, because how the fuck can you not predict that, it was still weird when Katniss decided. Like, “Oh, Peeta is wonderful so I’m going to kiss him and fall in love with him and yaaaaay.” Um, what? Can we see some sort of resolution there? And are Peeta and Gale really just fawning over this bitch like drooling puppies? COME THE FUCK ON. So basically, I was expecting some degree of romance there. But really, it was just practical and decisive in a creepy way. I expect to be wooed, here. Urf, the ending of this series just makes me upset. Because Suzanne Collins basically solves nothing.

And this is why I will always prefer the orginal, Battle Royale.
